Simple Home-made Face Masks

The skin is the biggest organ on the body, it works so hard and it can be sensitive to things we put it through everyday; air pollution, makeup, even our diet can affect it, so it is important that we remember to treat it well. We all love a good pamper session, and these home made masks can help out with a number of skin issues - as well as being super yummy!

DRY SKIN

Dry or peeling skin can be a pain, as well as making you feel self conscious. But, don't worry, we have rounded up our fave home made mask recipes to help ease  your dry skin and clear it up in no time.

The avocado and coconut oil  in this recipe will give your skin much needed moisture to help rejuvenate it, while the honey helps to heal any raw or scaly areas.

1/2 a very ripe avocado
2 tablespoons honey
1/2 teaspoon coconut oil

To make your mask, mash the avocado until it’s smooth and creamy, and then mix in the rest of the ingredients. If you have a blender you could easily combine all of the ingredients with it! Apply it to your face with a clean brush, making sure to avoid your eyes, and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Wipe your skin clean with a damp, warm cloth - pressing it onto the skin for 20 seconds and then wiping the mask away.

Oatmeal is perfect for soothing any rough or angry skin and it can even help to heal eczema breakouts!

1/3 cup instant oatmeal
1/2 cup hot water
1 tablespoon honey
1-2 tablespoons plain, natural yogurt

To make your mask, add the water to your oatmeal and stir for a few minutes until it’s fluffed up nicely.  You can then add the honey and yogurt, stirring it thoroughly to combine. Apply the mix all over your face, again , avoiding the eye area, leave on for 10 minutes or so, and then wash with warm water.

PUFFY SKIN

Some of us suffer from  puffy skin and, although it can be frustrating, there are some simple mask recipes to help remedy it.

The caffeine from the coffee grounds in this mask help to reduce swelling and puffiness in the skin, while the antioxidants in the cocoa powder will help to reduce ageing. Plus, the yogurt replenishes lost moisture! Score!

2 tablespoons freshly ground coffee
2 tablespoons pure cocoa powder
1 tablespoon honey
3 tablespoons yogurt

Simply blend all of the ingredients together until properly combined, then spread evenly over skin, and allow to absorb for about 10 minutes. When you rinse this mask off, massage your face gently to exfoliate as well!

Cinnamon is known to reduce inflammation and redness in the skin while lemon acid not only helps exfoliate your skin, but can minimize the appearance of dark spots, too! This mask will give you brighter skin!

2 tablespoons of pure honey
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 wedge of fresh lemon

To prepare your mask, warm the honey in the microwave for a few seconds, then combine it with the cinnamon and the juice of a lemon wedge into a small bowl. Gently massage the mixture onto your face and leave on for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse off with a nice warm flannel.

Pumpkin doesn't only make a fantastic Autumnal dish, it also makes the perfect ingredient for your homemade face mask!

1/4 cup pureed pumpkin
1 egg
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon milk
Blend the ingredients together into a smooth paste and gently spread over the face and neck, leaving to dry and absorb for 10-15 minutes. When ready, rinse off with a warm face cloth.

ACNE PRONE/ OILY SKIN

Oily skin is usually shiny, especially in the T-zone area. To test if you have oily skin, press a paper napkin to your forehead. When you pull it away, it will be soaked in oils. Don't be worried, though - the good thing about oily skin is it ages better than dry skin!

This mask is the ultimate smoothie for your face: strawberries contain salicylic acid which is great for combating that oil, while lemon juice helps to tighten pores and remove old, dead skin cells.

1/4 cup mashed strawberries
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon yogurt
1 tablespoon honey

To prepare, mash all of the ingredients together, but do not puree in a blender: you want this to be spreadable, not a runny liquid. Apply evenly to your face and let dry for 8-10 minutes. Wipe off with a warm, damp facecloth!

You can use a banana as a natural, homemade facial mask that moisturizes your skin and leaves it looking and feeling softer!

1 Medium banana
1/4 cup Plain natural yogurt
2 Tbsp Honey

Mash up the banana in a bowl into a smooth paste and fold in the yogurt and honey. Gently apply the mix to your face and neck and let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse it off with  warm water and a soft flannel.

Make sure you always remember to moisturise your skin after removing your face mask to keep it soft and glowing!
