10 Beauty Myths - Busted!
We've all heard a few old wives tales when it comes to our beauty and skin care regimen, but which ones should we take heed of, and which ones can be shrugged off as nonsense? Today, we're looking into some top beauty myths and debunking them!
1. PLUCK A GREY HAIR AND 2 MORE WILL APPEAR - FALSE
This is of course false as the amount of hair on your skin - whatever colour they are - is solely down to the number of follicles you have. Therefore, it is physically impossible that plucking a single hair out can lead to extra growth! Hooray!
And, plucking out those greys is not only tiresome, but it also wont stop them from appearing; so you can choose to embrace your new silver status, or head to the salon for a fresh colour on your locks!
2. WRINKLE CREAMS HAVE NO EFFECT - FALSE
Skin technology has really excelled in the last couple of decades, meaning the products we use are increasingly more effective and, while 71% of women believe that anti-wrinkle creams are ineffective, actually do work to keep the signs of ageing at bay. The best thing you can do when skincare shopping is to wise up on key ingredients and data. Look for things like what active ingredients are included and whether the product has lived up to its claims and selling points!
3. YOU SHOULDN'T PUT OIL ONTO OILY SKIN - FALSE
Skin which is prone to getting oily is often in need of hydration - think moisturisers and regular gentle cleansing - but did you know that applying oil can actually help oily skin to produce less oil in the long run (say oil more?!)? A good way to explain this technique is by saying that 'if someone with oily skin uses a drying product (particularly cleanser) which strips the skin of its natural oils, the skin will then overcompensate and try to moisturise itself by producing excess oil, therefore adding a little oil during your skincare regimen can actually put a stop to this.'
You needn't go in and smother the face with an oily product - just apply a little before bed or in the morning, allowing it to sink in and work its magic!
4.ITS POSSIBLE TO SHRINK YOUR PORES - FALSE
Just like the amount of hair follicles you have, pore size is genetic and there is no physical way to shrink them. You can make them appear smaller (or invisible) with makeup skills and regular exfoliating, but try to avoid products which claim that they can actually shrink your pores, as they wont, and you'll only be left disappointed.
5. YOUR BROWS SHOULD ALWAYS MATCH YOUR HAIR COLOUR - FALSE
Actually, makeup artists now tell us that brows can be up to three shades lighter or darker than your hair colour, depending on the look you're going for; if you prefer an edgier look then head to the darker end of the spectrum. Matching brows and hair may have been 'in' in the 90's but this is 2017 and brows are a big deal, so go ahead and mix up your shades!
